A few weeks ago there was a severe thunderstorm that resulted in a power outage in my area. It happened right after dinner, when my family and I would typically tune in to our evening TV shows for the night.
What some might have muttered was an inconvenience, I saw as a welcome break in our routine. We ended up all gathered around the living room picture window, watching the pine trees outside sway in the rainy wind—as if they were dancing—and sharing stories like we used to. The quietness of the house was peaceful. Simple. And I couldn’t help but smile when using candlelight and flashlights to venture through the halls.
This night was just one of countless examples of how people decide how to react to events that are out of their control. There is a saying by Randy Pausch that goes, “Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.” Fun and happiness can be had in some of the least expected places, as long as you decide to create it.
