Get To Know The Bad Yogi

What does it mean to be a "Bad Yogi"? Here's what Erin Motz has to say in her own words!

"I'm not a Bad Yogi because I'm "bad" at yoga (not possible, btw), but because I strive to embrace my imperfections (always easier said than done). I know that super difficult poses and transitions are all the rage and seem to be the source of so much inspiration, but it I think it really just further sells this messed up message that we need to be "more" before we can be like "them." We feel that if we can get a little stronger or a little more flexible, then we'll also embody this "inspirational" image. I so hate that. Remember to not always be waiting for the better version of yourself and try to simply enjoy what's already there. Your physical ability doesn't make you better. Show up, do what you can, let the rest go." ~Erin Motz

What do you never leave the house without? Lip balm, hand sanitizer, iphone. And approximately 700 useless trinkets that never leave my purse no matter how many times I empty it, haha!

Where is your favorite place to sport Juil footwear? And what have your experiences been?! I spend 90% of my time in yoga pants, so you can bet I wear them to and from classes, and since I live in super tropical climates most of the time, they’re definitely one of my favorites. Super comfy too!

What are the first three words that come to your mind when someone says: “grounded” or “connected?” trees. earth. savasana.

We want to know what your typical morning looks like! I wake up around 7am, start breakfast while drinking coffee and responding to emails and social media messages. I rarely schedule anything major to happen in the morning because I like to meander around my house in pajamas until the afternoon. Very glamorous, I know ;)

What is one mantra that is like a remedy for your soul? Anytime I feel lost and anxious or insecure, I always come back to the same one: I’m sensitive to inspiration and will know how to act when it hits.

How do you channel your inner 5 year old? I find really dumb jokes HILARIOUS and will laugh at them shamelessly no matter how old I get!

Tell us one fun fact about yourself. I’m a self-proclaimed Bad Yogi. I’m the red wine and French cheese loving type and in my classes. You're more likely to hear the occasional, accidental inappropriate joke than anything about the Sutras. I really think yoga should be simple, effective, and make you feel good. All the fancy stuff is just extra.

What is your favorite pose to teach in your classes? And why? Hmm, that’s a tough question. I really like teaching basic poses because there’s so much detail that gets lost in familiarity. It’s really interesting to re-visit them and make them fresh again.

If you’re not on a yoga mat, where can we find you? Random places, probably. I get cabin fever really quickly and love to go for a drive looking for something interesting. A cool coffee shop, some place with a view, anywhere green…

Last but not least, you have to fill us in on your favorite Juil style and color! I really like my Dalli gold sandals! Really feminine while still being comfy!

Erin’s a carniverous, red wine and French cheese-loving, traveling yoga instructor based in Tampa Bay. She teaches vinyasa flow and aims to keep her classes fun and accessible. You won’t hear much Sanskrit but you’ll probably get plenty of corny jokes, lots of core work, and sweet, delicious deep stretches. She teaches challenging classes to build a strong body while maintaining a clear mind. Teaching yoga has been one of her greatest pleasures and she practices to feed her teaching, but she teaches to feed her life.

When Erin’s not teaching, you can find her writing for the Huffington Post, MindBodyGreen, YOGANONYMOUS, My Yoga Online, DoYouYoga, and elephant journal.

Erin even featured Juil as one of the 6 Awesome Yoga Accessories You've Never Heard Of on The Huffington Post’s Healthy Living blog recently!
